Puppy Training in West Michigan for Calm, Well-Behaved Dogs
If your puppy is biting, having accidents, not listening, or just feels like chaos right now, you’re not alone.
The first few months are where everything gets set: behavior, habits, and how your dog learns to live with you.
Our puppy training in Grand Haven is designed to guide you step-by-step so your dog grows into a calm, reliable companion; Not a long-term frustration.
If You’re Feeling Overwhelmed…
You’re Not Doing It Wrong
You’ve probably tried:
- Watching videos
- Googling solutions
- Asking friends what worked for them
But your puppy still:
- Bites and chews everything
- Has accidents in the house
- Doesn’t listen when it matters
- Gets wild at the worst times
That’s because real training isn’t about tricks, it’s about building the right habits from day one.
We Train Your Puppy Where Behavior Actually Happens
- build focus and engagement
- Communicate clearly with your puppy
- Create structure that leads to calm behavior
- Prevent bad habits before they stick
Because the goal isn’t just a “well-behaved puppy”… it’s a dog that listens in real life.
Puppy Training Built around Focus,
Not Just Commands.
A puppy can learn “sit” in a few minutes.
The harder part is teaching them how to settle, pay attention, follow direction and make good choices when life gets exciting.
That’s why we use our Focus-Based Training System:
Build Focus → Communicate Clearly → Proof It in Real Life
We first teach your puppy how to engage with you. Then we teach the behavior clearly. Finally, we practice around the distractions, environments and everyday situations your puppy will actually experience.
Because knowing a command and being able to follow it when something interesting happens are two different things.

Puppy Training FAQs
What age should I start training my puppy?
You can start building good habits as soon as your puppy comes home. Early puppy training isn’t about expecting perfect obedience, it’s about teaching focus, communication, structure, potty routines, crate skills and how to live calmly in your home.
The earlier those foundations are clear, the less time your puppy has to practice habits you don’t want later.
What vaccinations does my puppy need before training?
Requirements depend on the training program and your puppy’s age.
For programs where puppies will be around other dogs or spending time in shared training environments, we ask that they are up to date on age-appropriate vaccinations, including rabies when age-appropriate, and have a recent negative fecal test.
For private in-home training, those requirements may be different because your puppy is being trained in their own environment rather than around a group of dogs.
If your puppy is still completing their vaccine series, that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to wait to begin training. We can help determine which training option is appropriate based on your puppy’s age, vaccination status and individual situation.
Can you help with puppy biting, jumping and chewing?
Yes. Puppy biting, jumping, chewing and wild bursts of energy are some of the most common problems we work on with young dogs.
Rather than simply telling your puppy “no” over and over, we teach you how to create clearer boundaries, redirect the behavior appropriately and help your puppy understand what they should do instead.
Do you help with puppy potty training?
Yes. Potty training is largely about creating a predictable routine, managing your puppy’s freedom and preventing repeated accidents while they learn where they are supposed to go.
We help you build a realistic potty-training schedule around your puppy, your household and your daily routine so everyone knows what to do consistently.
Do you help with crate training?
Yes. We help puppies learn that the crate is a normal place to settle, rest and spend short periods independently.
Crate training can also make potty training, nighttime routines, travel and everyday management much easier. The goal isn’t simply getting your puppy into the crate, it’s helping them become comfortable being there.
What does puppy socialization actually mean?
Good puppy socialization is about more than letting your puppy meet as many people and dogs as possible.
We want your puppy to calmly experience different people, dogs, sounds, surfaces, environments and everyday situations without feeling like they have to interact with everything they see. The goal is a confident puppy that can experience the world without being overwhelmed by it.
Can you teach my puppy to walk on a leash and come when called?
Yes. We begin building leash manners, engagement and recall foundations early so your puppy learns that paying attention to you matters even when something interesting is happening.
We don’t expect a young puppy to have finished off-leash reliability overnight. We build the communication and habits first, then gradually strengthen those skills around distance, duration and real-world distractions.
Do you offer puppy classes or private puppy training?
Dogology University focuses on private, real-world puppy training rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all group class.
Depending on your puppy, goals and schedule, we may recommend Private In-Home Training or our Mobile Day School, where we take on more of the hands-on training for you. We’ll help you determine which option makes the most sense before you enroll.
What is different about Dogology University's puppy training?
We use our Focus-Based Training System to build engagement first, teach your puppy clearly and then practice those skills around the distractions they will experience in everyday life.
We don’t just want your puppy to perform a command during a training session. We want you to understand how to communicate with your dog and build behavior that holds up at home, on walks and out in the real world.
How long does puppy training take?
Every puppy starts in a different place, so the right training plan depends on your puppy’s age, current behavior and what you want life to look like with your dog.
Dogology University’s core training programs are designed to give families enough time to teach the behavior, practice it and begin transferring those skills into real life. We’ll recommend the appropriate program after learning more about your puppy and your goals.
Do you offer puppy training in Grand Haven, Holland, Muskegon and Grand Rapids?
Yes. Dogology University works with puppy owners throughout West Michigan, including Grand Haven, Spring Lake, Ferrysburg, Holland, Zeeland, West Olive, Allendale, Muskegon, Norton Shores and the Grand Rapids area.
Depending on the program, training can take place in your home, your neighborhood and real-world environments throughout West Michigan so your puppy practices the skills where you’ll actually need them.
How much does puppy training cost?
The cost of puppy training depends on the level of hands-on help your family needs and which training program is the best fit.
Some families want private coaching so they can do more of the training themselves. Others want us to take on more of the daily training through Mobile Day School. We start with a conversation about your puppy, your schedule and your goals so we can recommend the right option before asking you to make a decision.
