Dog Training Services FAQs
What types of dog training does Dogology University offer in West Michigan?
Dogology University offers private in-home dog training, Mobile Day School, Board & Train, puppy training, obedience training, off-leash training and behavior training throughout West Michigan. We help with real-life issues including leash pulling, jumping, barking, reactivity, unreliable recall, poor manners and dogs that know commands but stop listening around distractions.
How do I know which dog training program is right for my dog?
That depends on two things: what your dog needs and how much of the hands-on training you want us to handle.
Private in-home training is best for families who want to be closely involved in the training process. Mobile Day School gives your dog significantly more hands-on work with a professional trainer while still bringing them home each day. Board & Train provides a more immersive training experience.
You do not have to figure that out before contacting us. We start by learning about your dog, your goals and what daily life currently looks like, then recommend the training option that makes the most sense.
Do you offer in-home dog training?
Yes. Dogology University provides private in-home dog training throughout much of West Michigan. Training can happen inside your home, around your neighborhood and in the environments where your dog’s behavior actually matters.
A dog that listens perfectly in a training room but falls apart when the doorbell rings or another dog walks by still has work to do. That is why real-world training is such an important part of our process.
What is Mobile Day School?
Mobile Day School is our hands-on daytime dog training program for busy families who want a professional trainer doing more of the daily training.
Instead of spending the day in one training facility, your dog works with us in real-world environments around the kinds of distractions they actually encounter. You also receive owner coaching so the behavior we build with your dog transfers back to you at home.
Can you help with leash pulling, barking, reactivity, jumping or a dog that won't listen?
Yes. We regularly work with dogs struggling with leash pulling, barking, jumping, poor impulse control, unreliable recall, reactivity and obedience that disappears around distractions.
The first step is understanding why the behavior is happening and what your dog currently understands. For more serious behavior cases or dogs with a significant bite history, we evaluate the situation first to make sure our program is the appropriate fit.
What training methods does Dogology University use?
We use our Focus-Based Training system to build engagement, clear communication and reliable behavior around real-world distractions.
Training includes reinforcement, structure, clear expectations and progressive proofing so your dog learns not only what a command means, but how to follow through when something more interesting is happening. We do not use e-collars or shock collars.
Our goal is not to create a dog that only listens to the trainer. The behavior has to transfer back to you.
How long does dog training take?
Most of our core training programs are four weeks because reliable behavior takes more than teaching a dog a few commands.
We first teach the behavior, then increase distance, duration and distraction so it can hold up in real life. Your dog’s starting point, training goals and behavior challenges determine exactly what we recommend.
What areas does Dogology University serve?
Dogology University is based in Grand Haven and serves dog owners throughout West Michigan, including Grand Haven, Spring Lake, Holland, Muskegon, Norton Shores, Zeeland, Allendale, Ferrysburg, Hudsonville, Grand Rapids and surrounding communities.
Because many of our programs are mobile or in-home, we are able to work with families throughout the lakeshore and greater West Michigan area. Contact us if you are unsure whether your location falls within our current service area.
How much does professional dog training cost?
The cost depends on how much hands-on training your dog needs and which program is the best fit.
We begin with a conversation about your dog and your goals. If an in-person evaluation is the appropriate next step, the evaluation is $125. After meeting you and your dog, we explain what we found, recommend the training option that makes sense and give you the exact investment before you make a decision.
What if we've already tried dog training and it didn't work?
That is more common than you might think.
A dog can understand “sit,” “come” or “heel” and still struggle when the environment becomes more distracting. Knowing a command and reliably following it in real life are not the same thing.
That is why our training doesn’t stop when your dog learns the behavior. We test it, strengthen it around real-world distractions and teach you how to maintain it after the program ends.
