Dog training session at Tunnel Park in Holland MI practicing loose leash walking

Dog Training in Holland, MI for Real-Life Results

From puppy training to behavior problems, we help Holland families build calm, reliable dogs that actually listen at home, on walks through Kollen Park, and everywhere in between.

Every dog and every household is different. A Golden Retriever puppy in Beechwood needs a different plan than a reactive rescue in Holland Township. That’s why we build structured dog training programs around your specific situation, not a one-size-fits-all package.

Whether you’re dealing with a dog that pulls you down the Heinz Waterfront Walkway, loses it every time someone walks past your house, or just needs solid obedience before summer hits and Holland State Park gets packed — we’ll build a plan that actually works.

We’re based in Grand Haven, about 25 minutes north on US-31, and we work with Holland families every week. Training takes place throughout Holland, MI, including Tunnel Park, Kollen Park, downtown, and your own neighborhood.

Dog Training in Holland That Works Where It Matters

Most dog training looks good during a session, but, falls apart the moment real life kicks in.

That’s because behavior problems don’t happen in a training facility. They happen when your dog spots a runner on the Macatawa Greenway trail. When the doorbell rings and your dog loses it. When you’re trying to enjoy a patio lunch on 8th Street and your dog won’t stop pulling toward every person who walks by.

We train in the environments where your dog actually needs to behave — your home, your neighborhood, the parks and sidewalks you use every day in Holland. That’s how results stick. Not because we told your dog what to do in a controlled room, but because your dog learned how to handle real Holland life.

Dog Training Services Available in Holland

We come to your Holland home and work directly with you and your dog, building better behavior in the exact environment where problems actually happen. Counter surfing, door manners, settling when guests arrive — we fix it where it lives.
Start your puppy off right before bad habits take hold. We help Holland families establish structure, communication, and daily routines that set puppies up for long-term success ; So you're not dealing with a 70-pound problem six months from now.
Barking at neighbors, reactivity on walks near the lakeshore, anxiety when you leave the house — we get to the root cause and help your dog build confidence and calm through clear communication, not quick fixes.
Build consistent, reliable obedience so your dog actually listens when it matters, not just during a training session, but when you're walking through a crowded Tulip Time festival or navigating a busy Saturday at Holland State Park.
Develop the kind of recall and focus that lets your dog enjoy real freedom safely; Whether you're at the Van Raalte Farm dog park, hiking Riley Trails, or just hanging out in your backyard.
We pick your dog up from your Holland home and spend the day doing structured, hands-on training in real-world environments throughout the area. Your dog comes home tired, focused, and measurably better behaved. You get a private lesson each Friday so you can reinforce everything yourself.

Why Holland Dog Owners Choose
 Dogology University

Holland is a great place to live with a dog, until your dog makes it hard to enjoy any of it.

You’ve got the waterfront at Kollen Park, the trails at Riley Trails and Tunnel Park, the dog park at Van Raalte Farm, downtown patios, neighborhood sidewalks full of families and bikes, and a lakeshore that gets busy from May through October. That’s a lot of stimulation for a dog that hasn’t been taught how to handle it.

We work with Holland families dealing with exactly these situations every week. We know what the walk from Beechwood down to the waterfront looks like on a Saturday morning. We know what Tulip Time weekend does to a dog that’s already reactive. And we know that most dog owners in Holland aren’t looking for a trick-based training program — they just want a dog that can walk nicely, greet people politely, and settle down at home without constant management.

That’s what we build.

Common Dog Training Challenges We See in Holland

  • Dogs that pull dangerously on walks along the Heinz Waterfront Walkway and Kollen Park boardwalk.
  • Reactive dogs that lunge at bikes, joggers, and other dogs on the Macatawa Greenway and neighborhood sidewalks.
  • Barking at delivery drivers, neighbors, and anyone walking past the front window.
  • Jumping on guests the moment they walk through the door.
  • Dogs that can’t settle during Holland’s busy summer season: beach traffic, cookouts, kids running through the yard
  • Overexcitement at the Van Raalte Farm dog park or Park Township Dog Park
  • New puppies from Holland-area breeders or rescues that need early structure before bad habits set in.

Your dog lives in Holland — not a training facility. So that’s where we train.

Three Simple Steps
to a Well-Behaved Dog

1

Start With a Conversation

Tell us what’s going on — what your dog is doing, what you’ve already tried, and what your day-to-day life looks like in Holland. We’ll listen, ask questions, and help you see a path forward.

Real Results from
West Michigan Dog Owners

See how dogs—and their owners—transform when training is done the right way.

Every dog you see here started somewhere; Pulling on leash, not listening, overwhelmed owners.

With the right structure and consistency, real change happens.

Why Dog Owners Choose Dogology University

We’re not here to give you a quick fix or teach your dog a few tricks that look good on video but don’t hold up at Kollen Park.

We’re here to help you build a dog that actually fits your life — calm at home, reliable on walks, and consistent in the real world.

We train where behavior actually happens. Your home near Central Park, your walks along the waterfront, your routine errands on 8th Street. Not a sterile classroom.
Our focus-based method builds clear communication between you and your dog, step by step. It's the same foundational approach our founder developed as a military K9 handler, adapted for family dogs and everyday life.
So results don't evaporate when the program ends. You'll know exactly what to do and why it works.
Between work, kids, and everything else, you don't have hours to train every night. Our programs are designed to fit your schedule, not the other way around. Day School families get daily professional training with a private lesson each Friday. 15 minutes of daily practice at home is all we ask.
Led by Matthew Lamarand, a U.S. Air Force veteran and former explosive-detection K9 handler. Our team has helped thousands of dogs and families across West Michigan build calmer, more reliable behavior — including many right here in Holland.
Led by a professional trainer with years of real-world experience working with dogs and families, not just controlled training environments.

Yes, and that’s actually a big part of what makes our approach different. Real-world training is at the core of everything we do at Dogology University.

Your dog doesn’t just need to listen inside your living room. They need to stay focused at the beach, on the trails, and around other dogs and distractions.

Our trainers work with dogs in real public settings, including parks, downtown Holland, and outdoor spaces throughout the area.

Through our Mobile Day School program, your dog gets daily exposure to new environments and real-life situations, which builds genuine confidence and reliable obedience, not just tricks that fall apart the moment something interesting happens.

Learn About Our Mobile Day School →

Great question, both are effective, but they work differently depending on your lifestyle and your dog’s needs.

Mobile Day School is our most hands-on program. We pick your dog up each morning and take them out for structured training sessions in real-world environments — think parks, sidewalks, pet-friendly stores, and public spaces around Holland. Your dog comes home each evening more focused and better behaved. Every Friday, you receive a private lesson so you learn exactly how to reinforce what your dog has been practicing all week.

In-home training happens right in your house, where many behavior challenges show up most — jumping on guests, counter surfing, not listening when it matters. A trainer works directly with you and your dog in your own environment, coaching you through the techniques so you feel confident handling things on your own.

Some families choose one, and some combine both for the fastest results. During your free consultation, we’ll help you figure out which option makes the most sense for your situation.

Find the Right Program for You →

Most families start noticing meaningful changes within the first one to two weeks. That said, every dog learns at their own pace, and the timeline depends on the behavior we’re working on and the program you choose.

A dog learning basic obedience will progress differently than one working through fear or reactivity.

Our Boarding School and Day School programs are typically structured over four to six weeks, with families reporting a dramatic shift in their dog’s behavior by the end of the program.

But we don’t just train and disappear — Dogology University offers ongoing support after graduation so you can continue reinforcing what your dog has learned. We’re in this for the long haul with you.

Absolutely. This is one of our specialties.

Dogology University was founded by Matthew Lamarand, a U.S. Air Force veteran and former explosive-detection K9 handler who has worked with dogs in some of the most high-pressure environments imaginable. That background gives our team a deep understanding of dog behavior — including fear, anxiety, and aggression — and the skills to address it safely and effectively.

We use focus-based, e-collar-free methods that build trust rather than suppress behavior. Whether your dog is lunging on leash, reacting to other dogs, or showing fear-based aggression, we create a customized plan that addresses the root cause,  not just the symptoms.

Many of our most rewarding success stories involve dogs that other trainers gave up on. We don’t believe in “bad dogs.” We believe in dogs that haven’t been given the right communication tools yet.

If you’re dealing with a reactive or aggressive dog in the Holland area, reach out for a free phone consultation. We’ll assess the situation honestly and let you know exactly how we can help.
