Getting a dog is gaining a new best friend. Your pup is going to be the one who sees you through all the highs and lows. They’ll lend you their ear when you need to vent, and they’ll tolerate your songs anytime you release your inner Ariana Grande. So, when it’s time to train them, you want to make sure you show them all the love they show you! As a Michigan dog trainer, I get asked a lot about the different forms of dog training, specifically about the use of e-collars. While this might seem like an easy way to curb your dog’s behaviors, it can do more harm than good. I always recommend my Michigan clients try humane dog training instead. If you’re wondering about the differences between the methods, here’s everything you need to know.

What Is Humane Dog Training?

Humane Dog Training is an evidence-based method for helping your dog learn how to behave. While an e-collar offers a quick zap, humane dog training is going to require a bit more patience. Instead of punishing your pooch for wrong behaviors, you are instead going to give them a reward every time they listen. Each time they get that reward, it’s going to reinforce behaviors. They are going to learn that each time they stand by the door to go to the bathroom or sit nicely when the mailman stops by, something good happens. Not only is this going to deliver long-term results, but it’s going to increase the bond between you and your pup. In fact, humane dog training is the best way to forge a positive relationship!

Benefits of Not Using an E-Collar for Training

Okay, so what about e-collars? There’s quite a bit of controversy surrounding them, and it can be hard to sort the opinions from the facts. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior lands pretty firmly against e-collars and other forms of adverse training. First of all, these methods are just not that effective compared to humane dog training. Animals who experience negative reinforcement are not going to want to participate in training. E-collars can also increase avoidance, anxiety, and even fear-based aggression. Dogs simply do best when treated with compassion and patience rather than pain and intimidation.
